Top tips for impactful website photos

Do you struggle to know what photos to post on your website? Here are my top tips for how your photos can have the most impact - by creating an emotional connection with your audience so that they want to work with or buy from you.

Photos should have a purpose

Think about why are you putting photos on your website. Are they to describe your services or to highlight your products? Images should only be added if they add to your audience’s experience and not just for the sake of it. Define what you want your photos to say to your audience and then post images which convey that. Your photos should tell your story to your ideal client, to create an emotional connection with them so they want to know more.  Think about the brands you know and love. What sort of photos do they post that capture your attention?

Your business will be judged on the first image

The first image your audience sees when they click on your website will be the ultimate judgement of your brand, so make sure it’s the message you want to convey to your audience. Your logo should look professional, a product image should show how you will satisfy your client’s desire or solve their problem, a photo of you should have your clothing, body language, setting etc. in line with your brand and your values. This should be consistent across all pages, as your audience won’t always come in via your home page.

Quality over quantity

Clients buy from people they know, like and trust and using generic stock images, amateur product photos or badly lit selfies will not build that with your audience. It’s important to learn to take good photos yourself or invest in good quality images from a professional brand photographer like ShutterMe Photography.

Saying that, having too few photos will not help you build up the know, like and trust factor either. One image will not be enough to convince your audience that they want to work with you or buy your products. You should aim to post enough photos to show your ideal client the story of your brand so that they fall in love with it and can’t imagine getting the same experience elsewhere. Imagine having your images do all that work for you, how amazing would that be? :-) Imagine all the time that would save you having to constantly post on social media to engage your clients…..

Make your photos work for SEO

If you are going to post all these amazing photos its’s also worth maximising them for SEO so that more potential clients see those photos.

  • Give all your images titles with the keywords your ideal client searches for as they help your SEO.

  • Pages of images without wording are hard to rank so gallery pages are not that helpful for SEO. People often want context too, so it’s better to have a few photos with some keyword rich content than pages with only images on. Google likes words too so this is a win for both your audience and your SEO.

  • Make sure your images are resized for web, as large files can affect your page loading speed. This will annoy your audience so they leave your website, which not only means you lose their business but will cause a high bounce rate which affects your SEO rankings.
